NCPA and Citi announces the ‘NCPA-Citi Music Workshops’

Delhi : The National Centre for the Performing Arts and Citi announce the launch of their series, ‘NCPA-Citi Music Workshops’. This series of three virtual workshops will commence with a session by celebrated tabla player and an eminent Guru, Suresh Talwalkar on ‘Understanding Intricacies of the Laya-Tala’ on 4th December 2021.

The 60-minute enlightening workshop will focus on how one can be mindful of the intricacies of laya, especially during improvisation, and effortlessly arrive at the sam, which is the highpoint of the tala cycle. The topics covered will be across genres: from khayal for vocalists, masitkhani gat for instrumentalists, and the aspect of microscopic laya for kathak dancers. The talk will be lined with insightful anecdotes of some iconic masters of laya-tala.

Dr. Suvarnalata Rao, Head – Programming, Indian Music, at NCPA says, “We are elated to associate with Guru Suresh Talwalkar to share his stupendous knowledge with students of performing arts. The aspect of rhythm is inherent in all human activities, including the field of performing arts. This workshop aims to enhance the understanding of the rhythmic aspect of laya & tala for a performing artiste, whether musician or dancer.
