The National Centre for the Performing Arts inaugurates ‘NCPA Catalyst’ – celebration of dance choreographies born during the lockdown

Mumbai : The national lockdown was by far the biggest turning point for mankind. While it may have led to a lack of privilege, it also became a catalyst for change. With each and every person stepping out of their conventional spaces, artists too across the world began to rethink and create art that was unseen and fresh in its style. While music and drama began flourishing on a new platform, even dance that was usually witnessed amid vibrant colours and lights took a complete digital route, with artists turning to alternate modes of presenting their choreographies online.

Bringing these artists and their art physically together on stage, the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) brings forth a classical dance event titled NCPA Catalyst – the first of many such presentations that would feature special choreographies that emerged during the lockdown.

Speaking about this initiative, Ms. Swapnokalpa Dasgupta, Head of Dance, NCPA said, “The lockdown has undoubtedly been one of the hardest phases for mankind, but it has also encouraged us to reinvent ourselves to suit the changing times. Performing arts too witnessed a change that none of us imagined, and it was indeed a refreshing sight to see how the lockdown continued to inspire artists to pursue their passion despite all the challenges. NCPA Catalyst is a celebration of all these efforts and choreographies that flourished despite the challenging times. Our attempt is to remodel choreographies that will bring the same magnificent aura that our audiences have always been adept to.”
